Al Ula – the historic city of Saudi Arabia that will mesmerize you

What do you love most as a tourist? Must be visiting new and unique places. Thankfully, some places still retain their inimitable charm and have not become a target of mass tourism. Al Ula in Saudi Arabia is one such location. We all know that this country has recently started allowing tourists to explore its attractions and since then is drawing a lot of spotlights.

Al Ula – the hidden gem of Saudi Arabia

When it comes to Saudi Arabia, we usually think of Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina. However, there is Al Ula, a small town with a history that dates back to several centuries and archeological remnants that will enthrall all tourists.

Al Ula is located in the northwestern part of Saudi Arabia, around 325 km northeast of Medina. It is a small town with historical relics from the Bronze Age. Doesn’t it sound interesting?

Al Ula is characterized by its mud-brick and stone houses that are estimated to be more than 2,000 years old. The walled city was founded in 6th century BC and was known for its fertile soil and abundance of water. It was an oasis that also lay on the ‘Incense Road’, the famous route through which spices and silk were traded between India, Egypt, and Arabia.

Al Ula still retains its look and you can see the mud-brick houses, exuding a historical aura.

Attractions of Al Ula – things you must see in this historic city

Madain Saleh is the first site in Saudi Arabia to get a UNESCO tag. It is the second-largest Nabatean Capital that has earned Al Ula the name of Saudi Petra. Madain Saleh is a city with 131 ancient tombs. It is important to historians as it gives us valuable information about life in the 1st century. This is a must-visit site of Al Ula and you will feel lost in history as you watch these huge stone relics.

The Ikmah Mountain is another historical attraction in Al Ula. The mountain has rock inscriptions that date back to 2,000 years and is a treasure trove for us. Names of tribes and laws of Liyanite inhabitants are inscribed on it.

Don’t miss the Al Ula viewpoint. The entire valley along with the red-rock mountains appears like a painting from this viewpoint.

Of course, don’t forget to try Saudi food in this city. Traditional restaurants offer Saudi delicacies like Kunafeh that you must enjoy.

When in Al Ula, imbibe its culture, soak in its beauty, and revel its historical importance. The small and quaint city surely will win your heart.
